Dental Phobia

Over 25% of people suffer from dentist-related anxiety, according to a recent survey by the British Dental Association.  Whether it’s fear at the prospect of surgery or invasive procedures, dental phobias are incredibly common – and can have a devastating effect on your oral health if problems go untreated as a result.

Dental phobias can be triggered by a wide variety of factors; the instruments, past experiences, the dentist, or general fear. The exact nature of the phobia is unique to each person, but our team in Leicester understand this, and aim to help you overcome any apprehensions.

Regular visits to the dentist are essential for your well-being and overall health; with studies linking oral health to your heart and complications with diabetes, you need to keep your teeth as healthy as possible.  Our dental clinic aims to make each and every patient feel comfortable and relaxed during their visit.  We strongly believe that every patient deserves the highest standard of care possible, and combatting dental phobias is an important part of overall care.

How do we help?

Our team has been specifically trained to assist nervous patients.  We offer the best technology and techniques for dental phobic patients.  More information about how we can help you are detailed below, or feel free to contact us if you require any further information or have any specific needs.

Minimising phobia with the environment

Our team provides patients with an environment where you can relax and feel at ease.  The reception area is comfortable, with plenty of seating, magazines and papers, and we’re happy to play relaxing music of your choice to calm you while you wait.

Minimising phobia with gentle dentistry and technique

At Lavender Road we take the time to get to know our patients. We aim to determine the cause of your phobia, so we can take the best course of action to alleviate anxiety. By providing a caring approach, our dental surgery has a calm atmosphere that lets patients feel safe and secure. Relaxation and peace of mind are important for health and healing, and our staff make sure that patients are in as peaceful a mind-set as possible.

Our technique involves talking and getting to know all our patients. This allows us to discuss dental procedures in detail and establish which aspect is the cause of your anxiety.  We are then able to guide you through your treatment; we’ll take you through all the stages of your treatment, and inform you how you should expect to feel and what you should expect to happen.  This will help you trust and be confident in your dentist and your experience.

Minimising phobia with sedation dentistry and technology

The personal touch is vital to providing an atmosphere that our patients can feel confident and assured, but our research does not only exclude the use of technology. We use sedatives, both oral and intravenous, for those who feel that they would be too afraid without them.

Minimising phobia with behavioural techniques

We take every effort to make your experience as pleasant as possible, but there are some methods which you may find effective beyond what we offer.

  • Booking a morning appointment stops you from thinking (and worrying about!) your visit.
  • Your first appointment will be a consultation, where you get to talk to your dentist and ask about your treatment. Nothing more needs to happen at this stage
  • A friend or a family member can be a great help if you’re worried. They can talk to you about their experiences and how positive they were.
  • Dental phobias can be triggered by feeling that you have limited control over what is happening to you. Agree with your dentist on a signal if you wish to take a break during your appointment.
  • Take your treatment in small, manageable steps. Start with something quick and simple, such as having your teeth cleaned, and work up to bigger treatments.

Our surgery prides itself on our patient care and treatment.  Keeping patients comfortable and relaxed is a crucial part of this. With our combination of caring service, relaxation techniques, and technology, we aim to put you at ease so you can have the best treatment possible.

TESTIMONIALS

“Please can you pass on thanks to your dentist for me? They extracted my tooth about two weeks ago – and made the whole experience easy. They explained the procedure & treatment very well. Can’t remember a thing whilst having the tooth removed, (sedated) came home and had a few quality hours sleep, went to work the next morning and have not needed pain killers, no problems at all encountered. I have virtually forgotten all about it and find myself already eating on the side – Which I’ve not done in years!

From dreading the procedure – I’d now happily recommend it!

Thanks you”
